Scent of the Month!
Jamaican Me Scaly
AUGUST SCENT OF THE MONTH
We're heading somewhere tropical for August — but this month's inspiration comes from a reptile with a much more mysterious history.
Jamaica Me Scaly
Inspired by the Jamaican Giant Galliwasp
A tropical vacation in a bottle. Bright citrus and juicy pineapple mingle with creamy coconut before settling into a smooth, warm rum base.
Scent Notes:
Tangerine • Orange Peel • Lemon
Pineapple • Tropical Coconut • Orange • Rum
But what exactly is a Jamaican Giant Galliwasp?
The Jamaican Giant Galliwasp (Celestus occiduus) was a lizard found only in Jamaica, making it an endemic species. It was one of Jamaica's native galliwasps and is believed to have disappeared sometime in the 1800s. The species is now considered extinct.
Its disappearance is connected to changes to its natural habitat, including those associated with Jamaica's historical sugar-cane plantation economy, as well as introduced predators such as rats.
In 2024, a 170-year-old preserved Jamaican Giant Galliwasp specimen was returned to Jamaica through a partnership between The University of the West Indies and the University of Glasgow. It was a small but meaningful piece of Jamaica's natural history coming home.
So while Jamaica Me Scaly smells like sunshine, pineapple, citrus, coconut, and a tropical getaway, its namesake reminds us of something a little more important:
Sometimes the creatures we make room for in our collections are the ones we need to remember to protect in the wild.
Jamaica Me Scaly is our August Scent of the Month and will be available for a limited time.
A little tropical. A little mysterious. And definitely a little scaly.
